Problems come in all sizes. There are small problems, and there are significant problems. The secret to success is using the right tool for the problem. One can react in a manner that is overkill, or one may respond in a way that is far too limited.
Racism is a sin of the heart. It is best resolved by heart transformation; however, there are times laws must be enacted and enforced to prevent the dire effects of racism. When I look around our country, I see cities, towns, and villages reacting in different ways. In some of our large cities, I have seen cities use a fly swatter on massive fires started by looters/criminals, not the peaceful protesters. The fly swatter has only fanned the flames and added insult to injury and has increased the animosity for all involved on both sides. It has strengthened the resolve of the lawless and disheartened those who are meant to keep the peace and have drowned out the vital message of the peaceful protesters.
In other small communities and villages, people are devouring the news. The news is coming from larger cities, and so the people in smaller towns are taking on the attitudes of the large cities. They are getting fired up and alarmed at what they see and want to take action. Often this is without:
1. Considering the environment where they live
2. Considering the size of the issue where they live
3. Considering the population of where they live
4. Considering the people of where they live.
As a result, they devise ways to combat sin that is not commensurate with their environment. Though well intentioned, they go for the shotgun to kill the fly. It takes several shots before the poor fly succumbs to the constant rain of pellets. Finally, they have proved their point and feel the great satisfaction of having done something; however, the town, symbolically, sits in ruins, sides on the issue have hardened, and the gap has widened.
Solving problems is not a one size fits all. One must objectively discern the true nature of the issue in one’s community. If you live in a small town, put away the shotgun, meaningful conversations with an occasional swat by the fly swatter will do.
