WARNING: The Coming Solar Eclipse and Biblical Illiteracy

I have been less than amused by the many prophetic utterances, authoritative claims, absolute fabrications, and ignorance of Scripture regarding the coming American Eclipse. It is a North American Eclipse (USA, Canada, and Mexico). It will also be seen in countries such as France, Iceland, Greenland, Russia, Spain, and Ireland; however, it is not seen everywhere in each country. In the USA, there is a thin belt running from Maine to Texas where the total eclipse will be seen. Some well-meaning people have aligned cities, numbers, and Scriptures and have created a set of gymnastic hermeneutics to make a point about the eclipse.

Now, don’t get mad; read this post to the end. To be honest, it is disturbing to me that the American Church usually dances to the beat of a different drummer. Remember the buzz about Kissinger being the Antichrist, the 88 reasons Jesus will come in 1988, the Y2K pandemonium, 9/11 conspiracies, the secret numerology charts, the Bible Code, and now a solar eclipse? I could name others, but I digress.

Consider the following facts:

  1. The solar eclipse will impact a small segment of the world.
  2. There are between two and five solar eclipses each year, with a total eclipse occurring every 18 months or so on the Earth. If one narrows the place of a total eclipse, it may take as many as 400 years to see two.  https://bit.ly/eclipse180
  3. The solar eclipse will not be seen in Israel and Palestine.
  4. It is not supernatural. It attests to the wondrous and meticulous creation of our LORD and is a sign that He is in control of the universe, as He controls the rising and the setting of the sun. It is like every day, a day to acknowledge His Lordship.

Consider the following observations:

  1. The USA is not the center of the universe, For God so loved the WORLD.
  2. It was supernatural when God stopped the sun to allow Joshua to fight on in battle. Joshua 10:12,13 (NIV)
    • On the day the Lord gave the Amorites over to Israel, Joshua said to the Lord in the presence of Israel:
    • “Sun, stand still over Gibeon,
    •     and you, moon, over the Valley of Aijalon.”
    • 13 So the sun stood still,
    •     and the moon stopped,
    •     till the nation avenged itself on[b] its enemies,
    • as it is written in the Book of Jashar.
  3. It was supernatural when God caused darkness to fall over the crucifixion of Jesus for three hours. 44 It was now about noon, and darkness came over the whole land until three in the afternoon, 45 for the sun stopped shining. (Luke 23, NIV)
  4. A solar eclipse would be supernatural if it took place unexpectedly without prediction.

Peter, in Acts 2 on the day of Pentecost, preaching a topical sermon, quoted Joel:

In the last days, God says,
I will pour out my Spirit on all people.
Your sons and daughters will prophesy,
your young men will see visions,
your old men will dream dreams.
18 Even on my servants, both men and women,
I will pour out my Spirit in those days,
        and they will prophesy.
19 I will show wonders in the heavens above
and signs on the earth below,
blood and fire and billows of smoke.
20 The sun will be turned to darkness
        and the moon to blood
before the coming of the great and glorious day of the Lord.
    21 And everyone who calls
on the name of the Lord will be saved.

    Acts 2:17-21 (NIV)

Notice these signs are supernatural and announce the coming of the Lord. This is not an eclipse or a red moon; this is an act of God at the end of days.

My appeal to you is to relax. Read your Bible. Use this time to discuss the wondrous creation of our Lord and the necessity of receiving Him into our lives. Many will make fools of themselves during this time; however, there will be little accountability. They will spiritualize what doesn’t materialize.

They will wait for the big, almost total solar eclipse heading toward Jerusalem on August 2, 2027. There will be lots of books, lots of numbers, and lots of words. Just be still and anchor yourself in His Word.

May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit. Romans 15:13
