Who can deny the beautiful melody of the Irish singer Enya’s Only Time? The lyrics wash across the soul like a soothing breeze on a warm day. The melody creates a rhythm in the heart that absorbs each note, captures each word, and runs ahead to see what time holds. Memories of better days, loved ones passed, opportunities missed, and hope revived. The haunting words mix melancholy and hope as though they are meant for one another, awkward friends traveling together on a long road trip in silence. Melancholy and hope straining to see around each bend of time and finally breaking their silence with a question: Who Can Say? Only Time.
Life confounds us with mystery. Our words betray our hearts when we silently utter them; who can say, only time. We frequently surrender to the gentle and sometimes turbulent flow of time, allowing it to sweep us to places unknown. There is that awkward silence as we face our mortality, weaknesses, questions, doubts, and fears. We must face the unknown but never alone. We can’t know what time will bring to us or what each day or minute holds. As I repeatedly listened to this song this morning, my heart changed the lyrics: Who can say, only GOD. Jesus started us on the race, is at the finish line, and is with us through time. Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; Hebrews 12:2.
Who can say, Only God?
