As a minister for nearly 50 years, I have had the privilege of sitting with, praying with, and holding the hand of many who were about to leave this world. I have sat beside them or around family as they draw their last breath. Of course, I allowed the person who was transitioning from this life to the next to lead the conversation if they were able. Here is how I can summarize all the discussions.
Not once:
1. Did politics come up.
2. Did sports come up.
3. Did a new car come up.
4. Did food come up.
5. Did vacation come up.
In all instances most of these came up:
1. Heaven and Hell
2. Desire of confirmation that he/she was ready for heaven.
Confession.
3. Desire to see family cared for after gone.
4. Desire to say I love you one more time.
5. Desire to hear: your legacy lives on in your children,
grandchildren, and/or your friends.
When I counsel young people regarding careers, college age and above—I start with eternity and work backwards.
1. What happens after death? If there is a heaven and a hell like
the Bible says—what is your choice?
2. How then must you live?
3. What do you want to leave your family?
4. What do you want to accomplish in this world? Why?
5. Do you want to be treated as others treat you? Why or Why not?
As we sit in our homes, it would be great if we came out living our life for the second list and not the first list which will not matter one day. And maybe we should ask ourselves the questions of the 3rd list and behave accordingly? I am not saying we will not discuss the first list, just that the 2nd list becomes the priority.
