A startling yet unremarkable Guinness world record was broken this past week at the City Museum of St. Louis, Missouri. People gathered wearing underwear on their heads to break a world record, and they did it with 355 people. Wow, what an unimpressive world record. I don’t believe Wayne Gretzky, Simone Biles, or Jerry Rice should worry about their records being less impressive now that 355 people have put underwear on their heads. Come on, people, what are you thinking?
The world has turned upside down and with the underwear stunt, literally upside down. What is going on? Free speech is turning into compliant and authorized speech, even compelled speech. Flag waving is becoming terrorist flag waving. Praying is considered inaction. Patriotism is now considered radical. Criminals are given the benefit of the doubt. A graduation speaker chugging a beer is applauded, and one promoting traditional marriage and family is booed. The Browns are predicted to take the AFC North. I am confused.
One thing I am not confused about is the people who turned their world upside down. They preached a new message of hope. They preached of one who died, was buried, and was raised from the dead on the third day. They preached of one who offered forgiveness for sin and a heavenly home. They risked their lives, and many gave their lives for the message. In Acts 17:6, the religious leaders referred to them as those who have turned the world upside down.
The hope of our society is churches dedicated to turning their communities right side up. We share without apology our commitment to the Christ who has redeemed us. We share without apology a life-giving message of hope, peace, and resurrection. We unashamedly declare God’s plan for marriage, family, life, and death.
If 355 people can unashamedly show up with underwear on their heads, we can certainly be bold enough to turn our world right side up; we are the Church.
