Charlie Kirk: A Christian Voice

On this 24th anniversary of 911, we anticipated discussing that horrific day in American history, when lives were lost, our security was rattled, and heroes were revealed. That day eventually brought us together as no other day in my lifetime. I was a pastor of a congregation at that time, and without any call to prayer, people started stopping at the church to pray. That Sunday, the churches were full. We do remember.

However, a shot rang out on a college campus in Utah yesterday that changed the direction and focus of today. Charlie Kirk, an outspoken Christian, was assassinated. Many, if not most, will call it a political assassination. Indeed, Charlie Kirk often wore a political robe in addressing the conflict of faith and culture, but his identity was primarily as a Christian, a follower of Jesus Christ. He carried light on campuses where darkness has for too long been cloaked in positive terms. He discussed, he challenged, he debated.

The Apostle Paul warns us with these words:

Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. 11 Put on the full armor of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes. 12 For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.  Ephesians 6:10

Charlie Kirk did not die for a political ideology; he died for his Christian faith that challenged some modern political and cultural mores. If you have listened to Charlie Kirk for any length of time, you know that following Jesus was primary and was his heart, his core. With that in mind, I choose to take a broader view and see this for what it is: an attack from the Evil One to silence a rising voice against darkness. Our struggle is indeed against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.

With this in mind, I pray for the apprehension of the assassin, but primarily that Charlie Kirk’s voice will not be silenced, but that God will raise up a generation of men and women who will boldly share the Gospel of Christ. That his voice will not be silenced but multiplied and scattered throughout our broken nation. And this Sunday, on September 14, Christians will gather to commit themselves earnestly to prayer for boldness to speak His Word and for healing for our land.
